PLR Articles – What Are They?

PLR articles stands for Private Label Rights. This is a license, according to Wikipedia, where the author sells most or all of the intellectual property rights to their work. PLR comes in many different formats including reports, ebooks, articles grapics, email newsletters and even videos.  For this post, I am concentrating on ebooks and articles as this is a blogging site aimed at bloggers and authors.

These type of articles (PLR) are ones that you can change any way you like.  For example, you can modify the words, add to them and also the graphics in any way you see fit. The good part is, you can even claim the article as your own when you are finished!

Similar licenses to PLR are Resell Rights. Here, you can buy goods or services with the intention of selling them rather than using them.  This is usually done for profit. Software and ebooks are very easy to obtain by resellers. Their digital format makes them excellent for ‘net distribution. You also have the ability to resell the product or article as many times as you like without having to pay royalties to the owner. You cannot, however, grant the same resell rights to your customer.

This is where Master Resell Rights (MRR) come in.  Here you are licensed to resell a product as many tmes as you like. For example, if you have master resell rights of an article, you can sell the same piece over and over again to different , people. You are also able to resell the resell rights.  Meaning, not only can you sell the article, you can also sell the right to sell the article to the buyer…Are you getting confused yet??!

Advantages of PLR

  • You save tiime
  • You save money compared to the headache of hiring a writer or outsourcing
  • You gain a reputation of being an “expert” while knowing nothing about the subject

In addition, PLR content is best used as a ‘resource’ rather than a ‘source’ of information.  This means that users consider rewriting and improving existing content before distributing under their name or own brand.  This way it has your own ‘personal stamp’ on it.

PLR Personified…

One person from the UK who is big on PLR is Andrew Reynolds. He started from humble beginnings as an internet marketer in his forties and is now considered to be a top internet marketing guru.

He now holds seminars world-wide bringing other expert internet marketes to expand on their internet marketing niche. I actually went on one of his 3-day seminars in Brighton and took loads of notes.  However, I found it was way too easy to get carried away emotionally and sign up for the next seminar that any of these experts could be holding, or buy their latest books or video courses.  Which were priced up to the roof…

It is actually better, in my opinion, to learn in a smaller setting where you can take notes and ask questions from the instructor at the end of the class or mini-seminiar. Remember, just one sentence given may end up being a lightbulb moment for you and you can work your way up from there.

An example is while at a class with a successful young internet marketer called Shaquir Hussein.  I went to a small hotel in West London for a seminar run by him for just 40 people.  I asked one of his assistants for some advice and i was told that I should put a system in place where I collected emails from visitors to my site, then send them valuable email content.  As I gained their trust, I could go on to promote my free offers and paid offers over the time these people were subscribed to my list.

So you see, you have to learn how and when to realise you are being taken for a ride or given a genuine nugget of information.

There is a small warning I would like to give you…You see, there are different PLR article qualities.  Some articles are badly written, and outdated content.  Some is more relevant and up to date.  There are PLR directories that you can join where content is added monthly for a monthly fee.  You will have to do your research and find the quality ones.

This is a subject that I am still looking into as PLR articles are useful if you want to give away free bonuses as offers to your potential email opt-in visitors.  You could write your own free offers, but if you are new or intermediate like myself, why give yourself more work to do?? Think about it…

  1. Thank you for great information!

I think many marketers used to just copy and paste them onto their website when Google was not so strict about duplicate contents. Now these easy days are over, and we have to create unique articles. However, I still use them for the inspiration, and as you suggest, these can be a great tool for the free bonuses or email sequences.

    • Hi Kyoko, those were the days!

Very few people use PLR articles these days, but they could save so much money compared to outsourcing which is more the norm now.

I am learning about email sequences as we speak and thought of PLR aticles to give as free bonuses…

      Let’s see what happens!

  2. Plr articles definitely seem like a decent option to award bonuses to your email list without needing to expend the time and effort of writing extra content. Also as you mentioned its cheaper than outsourcing as well so I do see the benefits of it.
I might have to look into trying it out once I’ve created my own email list in the future.

    • Yes, I fully agree with you and hope that as time goes on, you will try it out.  Remember that article quality is important though so you will have to research to find the good PLR sites on the internet.

  3. Even after signing up to a few PLR companies that will give you PLR articles to save you some time and money, I have been caught using the PLR Method for a while now and I need to say that it is going to make us some serious money if we stick at it.

I’m always very dubious when I hear the letters, PLR as I am worried about using content from another point or real source.

Do you think that you will ever stop using PLR content, or do you think you would be better to use your own original content?

    • Hi Matthew,

All my content up to now has been completely original.  I find PLR is useful for bonuses, etc.

With PLR, I can copy edit, and rewrite articles if I get Private Label Rights.  Then it is mine to sell and resell.

I am still new to PLR and will make sure if I go down that route I put my personal stamp on it…

  4. The idea of offering your email subscribers a free digital product like an Ebook , is a great idea, and something that I want to start doing.  I just don’t know where to look. Have you had any luck in researching quality PLR articles? The idea is very interesting, and would help to gain email subscribers to my website. It is definitely something that I will need to research. Thank you for the great information.

    • Hi Jenny,

In answer to your question, I have been thinking of using IdPlr.com.  They have a large database of ebooks, audio books and videos.  You can resell them if you buy private label rights and also rewrite them in your own style.

You can also use them as articles in your email newsletters.  IdPlr can either be paid for every 3 months or Lifetime Membership…

      Do check them out..

      Wishing you all the best

      Stella

  5. So are these kind of like stock images and such that you would use on your own website? Do you always have to pay for them? It’s an interesting concept and this is the first time I have heard of anything like it. I think it could be really useful in some circumstances, but honestly I’m still pretty confused about how it works.

If you end up doing more research and trying out platforms and things. I would love to see an update to your article with more information!

    • Hi Mariah

PLR means Private Label Right..They can either be in ebook, audio book or video format.  They cover many different kinds of niches and you can use them as a bonus to giveaway to your email subscribers.  Plr ebooks can be re-written and made your own with your own ebook cover.  They can be used page by page as a 10 day course for your email subscribers.

Check out IdPlr.com and have a look around their site to grasp a clearer idea as to what I mean.

I will take your suggestion to heart about expanding  more on the subject.

      All the best,

      Stella

  6. Buying PLR articles and content may be a way for beginner marketers, however, if you’d like to rank higher, wouldn’t you be sacrificing higher search engine rankings due to duplicate content? Plus beginners don’t get the benefit experience in content writing gives them, even if at first, their writing may not sound like it’s written by an expert or even good. If choosing to purchase these pre-written content for email or bonus writing only, may be the best use of these but not on websites where ranking can suffer.

    • Reinaldo,

The good thing about PLR material is that you can modify it and rewrite making it your book., video, newsletter. etc.

That requires some effort and time on your part, but the material will end up having your own voice and style of speech in the end.  Remember the net is full of people in similar niches, but we use different styles of speech, keywords and may have different twists of selling proposition.

Not entirely for beginners if you look at it from that angle.

Also, PLR material is meant to be an add on to existing content, not a total replacement.

      Thanks for your comment…much appreciated.

  7. Hi Stella,

Interesting article, in what ways would you recommend using PLR articles? In the past I’ve used them as free bonuses for people who subscribe to my email lists, is this a route that you would recommend taking? Are there other uses for PLR articles that you could potentially recommend?

    Thanks

    Nathan

    • Hi Nathan,

I listed all the different uses for PLR material in my post…I am definitely taking this route to extend my site content material and use in different ways. This could be as more content or in newsletter form.

  8. Hi Stella

Your post clears up the mysteries of the different types of PLR, which has rather puzzled me for a time. I see many people recommending giving away e-books etc in return for emails to build your email list, but I now understand much more about doing that. As you say, creating your own E-book does at first seem a formidable task, and I really like the idea of being able to adapt someone else’s for your own use.

Please could you give me some idea of how much one would have to pay to buy an E-book with resell rights?

I had never heard of IdPLR. Is it really worth joining as a free member, or is the quality of PLRs available of a much lower standard than if you joined as a Gold member?

Thank you so much for your really helpful and informative post.

    Chrissie 🙂

    • Hi Chrissie,

Lifetime membership at IdPLR costs $147 for life.  You get over 200,000 ebooks and more PLR material in the  form of videos, graphics and audio podcasts.

Individual prices are not given.  You are meant to take your pick from the PLR library.

And it is a big one!  Not to worry though everything is in alphabetical order and you can enter a search for what you need by topic.

      All the best!

  9. Years ago I did purchase some PLR articles for dirt cheap.  I know you don’t want to put them on your website.  It will make your content duplicate which isn’t going to do you any good in the long run.

However, I do know the quality of PLR articles is typically pretty low, though.

I have been buying and selling websites for years, though. I might take a look at idPLR.  The lifetime package is only $147 which should be easy to make my money back quickly!

    • Hi Garen,

You are obviously more seasoned in PLR material than I am, but what I did notice about the material at IdPLR, is the ideas it gives for fresh content.  Personally, I find the quality quite good in what I have read so far.

I suppose it also depends on your niche and if it is very technical. In that case, you are better off hiring a writer to research and write content for you.

      All the best,

      Stella

  10. For me your article on PLR was a refresher article of sorts. I used to use them as you suggested in my writings after rewriting them and it did work to a point. Back than I was not looking at writing as a business like I do now. So perhaps it is time for me to revisit some I still have on my computer and see if I can use them to my advantage in my writing.

    • Hi Cathy,

Good for you!  I am pleased you feel inspired to start using PLR material again..  It is very useful isn’t it?

      To your success,

      Stella

  11. I had never heard about PLR articles before, but it sounds intriguing. I’m currently writing all my website content myself. At some point I WILL have to ramp up the productivity. Where IdPLR is concerned, how are their articles / posts categorized? And is the gold membership charge a one-time payment, or do you have to pay every year or month?

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Norman,

IdPLR material is categorized into ebooks, videos, templates, graphics and audio podcasts.  Each of these types of PLR products are in alphabetical order.  You can also search by subject or topic to find what you need.

As for Gold membership, you just pay once for life.  A brilliant bargain!

      All the best Norman

  12. I’m a new blogger, that has just built his first blog site some months ago. My blog talks about traveling. Beside technical problems of having my site up and running, what I’m struggling most is creation of new content. Your article just made my day, I didn’t know that any site like idplr could exist. Thank you for en lighting me, you just gave me some awesome ideas how to enrich the content of my site using free articles allowed for re-use.

    • Hi Leo!

It’s a real pleasure to inspire you on your blogging journey.  I hope you reap a lot of success using IdPLR material.

      All the best,

      Stella

  13. Hi Stella, I am familiar with PLR products and have purchased a few.  There is the concern if they have the most current information.  Then there is the time factor of rewriting the articles to give them your voice and brand, I suppose as you say they can serve as inspiration. Surely there is an easier way of providing current content.

    • Hi Mrs Jesse,

The easiest way of providing current content is to hire a writer to research content and write it in your style of speech.  It can work out to be very expensive though!

  14. I never knew PLR existed and am so grateful i found this post!   This will be a huge help.

I do have a question for you.  If you use PLR articles on your site how do you avoid it being flagged as duplicate content as i’m sure many other people are using them?

Also IDPLR looks awesome and will be checking it out!

    Thank you!

    • Hi Barry,

To avoid your PLR product becoming duplicate web material, you simply modify the content!  This means re-write it using your own words and style of speech.

This does require some work but still works out cheaper than hiring a writer.

I am glad this post is helpful to you.

  15. Thanks for the great information!

I did not know anything about PLR and I think it is of interest to use the products that appear with Private Label and Resale rights licenses, which mean that you can SELL, EDIT or even CLAIM the product inside as your own!

Being in the business since 2008 and with over 76.000 members, IDPLR is—by far—the largest and most reputable PLR membership on the Internet. Why can we say this? Let’s find out.  We need to create unique items. Thank you

    All the best!  ArtiaB
